University Total Hour Requirement:
- The university total hour requirement is 121 hours. For a dual degree program 140 hours are required. Questions regarding total hour requirement may be directed towards an academic advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Hours for the following courses are included in total hours but do not apply toward the hours required for graduation:
- Select Developmental Courses (A&S 10003, 10004 and 10006)
- Courses in which grades of F, M, Z, U, NF and SF were received
- Duplicate/repeated courses
- Hours in excess of the restrictions listed in the Arts & Sciences section of the catalog for PEB, Military Science, workshops, individual study/research, internship/practicum, pass-fail, credit-by-exam, CLEP, Advanced Placement, and Applied Music.
Upper Division Hour Requirement:
- The College of Arts & Sciences requires a minimum of 42 hours of coursework at the 30000 or 40000 level. Transfer coursework is considered upper division only if the work was successfully completed as upper division at the transfer institution. Community College coursework is always classified as lower division.
College General Requirements:
- The General Requirements of the College of Arts & Sciences include the University Liberal Education Requirements (LERs), US10001-1 hr (Orientation) and additional coursework in Mathematics/Logic, Foreign Language, Social Sciences and Basic Sciences. The General Requirements are listed in detail on the reverse side of the Major Sheets. Questions about the College General Requirements can be answered in the College Office, 105 Bowman Hall.
Major/Minor Requirements:
- In addition to the College General Requirements, students must satisfy the requirements of his/her major and minors (if any) as listed on the Major/Minor Sheets. Major Sheets are received when students formally declare major/minors in the College Office.
Grade Point Average Requirements:
- Students must maintain an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 for all coursework at Kent State University as well as a minimum GPA of 2.0 in each Arts & Sciences major and minor and 2.0 GPA in the writing-intensive course.
Pass/Fail Limitations:
- One course may be taken Pass/Fail per semester up to a 12-hour limit. Courses which are included in the College General Requirements and courses within a student's major or minor department may not be taken pass/fail, regardless of whether the course is being used as an elective.
Residence Requirement:
- The Residence Requirement of the College of Arts & Sciences requires that you complete either your first 91 or your last 30 hours of course work at Kent State University. Transient work may not be completed within the final 30 hours if the student enrolled at KSU as a transfer student.
Transfer Coursework:
- Questions about the applicability of transfer coursework to the College General Requirements may be answered in the College Office. Transfer work in the major/minor department should be discussed with the student's major/minor advisors and recorded on a Transfer Evaluation form, which is available in the College Office. The completed Transfer Evaluation form must be returned to the College Office for processing.
Incomplete / In-Progress:
- If a student has Incomplete (IN) or In-Progress (IP) coursework on their transcript, the student is responsible for ensuring that his/her instructors submit formal grade changes prior to the published deadline. If formal grades are not reported within the proper time frame, coursework cannot be applied toward meeting graduation requirements. IP/IN grades are not permitted for final grades. Any IN/IP grades, remaining on a student's record upon graduation, cannot be changed after his/her degree has been posted to the academic record.
Transient Coursework:
- If a student finds it necessary to complete graduation requirements with transient coursework, he/she should apply for the next commencement following the semester in which the transient work is completed. Institutions do not provide official transcripts quickly enough to allow qualification for graduation during the same semester. Transient work may not be completed within a student's final 30 hours if they enrolled at KSU as a transfer student.
