About the Program

Although emphasis is placed on preparing outstanding physicians who will practice at the community level, especially in the primary care areas (internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology), graduates of the B.S./M.D. program have continued their professional training in medical residencies in all areas of specialization, including surgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, dermatology and ophthalmology. NEOUCOM is fully accredited by the American Medical Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

The educational program leading to completion of the B.S. and M.D. degrees consists of two phases, which can be completed in six or seven years. Phase I is completed in two to three years at one of the three consortium universities. This phase is called integrated life sciences at Kent State University. The integrated life sciences program includes coursework in the biological and physical sciences and Liberal Education Requirements.

Students who meet specific academic criteria upon completion of Phase I are guaranteed a reserved place for four years of medical school training at NEOUCOM and its associated teaching hospitals. NEOUCOM is located in Rootstown — just 10 miles from the Kent Campus. Included in the curriculum are basic medical sciences, clinical sciences, a special humanities sequence and 48 weeks of core clinical clerkships with emphasis on the care of hospitalized patients. Clerkships are available in internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry and family medicine.

Admission to Phase I

NEOUCOM coordinates the application process for all three consortium universities. Students may obtain a special B.S./M.D. application by contacting the Office of Admissions at NEOUCOM by telephoning 1-800-686-2511 (toll-free within Ohio) or 330-325-6270. Although students may apply to any or all three of the consortium universities, they will be considered for admission only at the schools to which they indicate they would like to apply on the B.S./M.D. application form. Please note: admission to Phase I is limited to students who have completed high school but not yet begun college studies (excluding college courses taken while in high school).

Students are able to apply for our Early Action Program, which allows them to apply by Oct. 1 and be considered for acceptance by Dec. 1. Application material (listed below) must be submitted to NEOUCOM by the Oct. 1 deadline. Students applying for regular admission are asked to submit the same materials to NEOUCOM with their application form by Dec. 15, in order to be considered for the B.S./M.D. program:

1. An official high school transcript showing your coursework in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades, as well as your senior year courses.

2. Official ACT or SAT scores. You will need to identify NEOUCOM by its school code on the Score Report Request Form. The NEOUCOM SAT code is 1692 and the ACT is 3315. If you have taken the SAT or ACT but did not have your scores sent directly to NEOUCOM, you may obtain an Additional Score Report Form from your guidance counselor.

3. An application fee of $30 for each of the schools to which you are applying (Kent State University, The University of Akron and Youngstown State University), plus a NEOUCOM processing fee of $10.

Completed applications are reviewed, and approximately 160 candidates will be invited to the Kent Campus for interviews, which are held one weekend in November for early action applicants and one weekend in February for regular admission applicants. Thirty-five students will be selected to begin integrated life sciences studies at Kent State. Applicants will be notified of their status by early April.
