Program Options
Students can choose among three major subfields of anthropology: biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology. Each anthropology major completes some coursework in each of these subfields. However, early specialization is possible, and a wide range of specialty courses permits students to develop their particular interests fully.
Program Requirements
All students pursuing bachelor's degrees at Kent State complete a series of liberal education requirements. Anthropology majors take courses in English composition, mathematics, or logic, foreign language, humanities, fine arts social sciences, and basic sciences. Biological Anthropology
Human evolution, genetics and modern human variation represent just a few of the interests of biological anthropology. Closely allised to archaeology, biology and cultural anthropology, this discipline today offers employment and career possibilities despite a declining market in other academic areas. The biological anthropology program is currently associated with a Ph.D. program offered though the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Northern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM).

Cultural Anthropology
Students explore the diversity of human culture through a variety of ethnographic area study courses (including the study of Oceania, Asia, Africa and South America). Theoretical and topical courses are also available. Cultural anthropologists from Kent State have conducted field work in Africa, Asia, North America and the Pacific Islands.

Archaeology
This discipline examines past human societies through the materials preserved at arachaeological sites. Courses concerning both Old World and New World archaeology are available. Kent State archaeologists have conducted extensive studies in Ohio and offer practical experience through a summer field school and other funded projects.

A Bachelor of Science degree is also offered, which adds training in geology, biology, geography, mathematics, and chemistry.
  Special Department Programs
The Field School in Archaeology allows students to take part in an excavation or field survey under the direct guidance of a staff archaeologist. Materials obtained from the dig are studied and analyzed throughout the academic year.
Also, our new Field School in Neotropical Ecology provides opportunities for students to research primate behavior in South American environments.
