Is BGS Right for You?
While the BGS Program is very individualized and allows freedom of creativity in planning, choice of this degree is not right for everyone. The BGS degree should not be an option for a student who is undecided about future outcomes of graduation. Choice to pursue a BGS degree requires extensive research and responsibility by the student, as they are ultimately the designer of the degree. A specific rationale of the degree design is required - one that describes the focus of the degree. The BGS should not be a "mish-mash" of coursework without purpose or plan. Research and consultation with community leaders, employers in the field of choice, or graduate school advisors, may be important resources to apprise you of necessary course, experiential, and licensure requirements for entry into the job market, educational objective, or general career direction you wish to pursue.
Regional campus students should view their campus course catalogs to determine availability of upper division coursework (minimum of 42 upper division course hours required). If your campus does not offer extensive upper division courses, consider options of traveling to other regional campuses or to Kent Campus.
As one can see, a BGS program plan cannot be developed effectively without considerable preparation and assistance from experts in your field of choice. Please consider all aspects of your degree choices when considering the BGS degree.
Requesting a BGS Evaluation
A student considering the BGS degree program must arrange a conference with a BGS program advisor prior to application and submission of the BGS proposal. This can be arranged by appointment in the College Office (105 Bowman Hall), a telephone conference appointment, or through regularly scheduled regional campus visit appointments. During these sessions, your advisor will review the results and interpretation of the BGS Evaluation. This evaluation summarizes all current and completed coursework and itemizes remaining graduation requirements to complete the BGS degree. In order to meet with a BGS advisor, please complete the Request for Program Evaluation linked below. Upon completion of your request, you will be contacted by a BGS advisor and may set up an appointment.
